Iam travelling to the Alps in June and was planning to avoid the motorways as a cost cutting exercise. Now i might be missing something but whats to stop you leaving the motorway at the exit before a booth and joining again after?

i also thought of that.
unfortunatly all the access roads to the motorway are major roads and, as such, all have paybooths.

nice try though...:ROFLMAO:

Would have done it years ago if it had been possible ...:cry: But i'm afraid it's not! all the access roads (main or not) have paybooths!::bigsmile::ROFLMAO:

avoid the motorways as a cost cutting exercise.

its not always a costcutting exercise, the N roads can be very slow and twisting.

they also go through nearly every village/town enroute.

great if you arnt in a hurry and want to see the scenery.::bigsmile:

i think the tolls for your van would be reasonable.

have a look >>HERE<< for an idea of what it woulkd cost on the Autoroutes

i would say your van would be in the group 2 class for toll costs.

Yep the froggies have thought of that, tant pis .. you can't get either onto or off of a peage section without going thro a toll booth. (leastways not without a bit of off-roading). Of course you can work your route out so that you miss the peage bits out,, e.g. between Boulogne and Abbeville. Sometimes the alternative is fine is you want a scenic route, but the sections tend to be quite long and often taking the autoroute is a lot quicker.

The French are also very good at digging up the roads in the centre of towns and not giving any diversionary routes Beware!!!!!! We have been lost several times like this its alright if you have a reasonable size camper but if its bigger then it can be fun. not :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Well it looks like i will use the motorway for the first leg to Troyes four hours and 30 euro tolls compared with over seven hours on the A roads and all that stop starting is not good economy wise in an auto 2.5 V6 petrol.

Toll for a car is about 10 cents a km. so doubles your fuel running costs

I'm never in a hurry
