advise on Tow Bars Please (1 Viewer)

I have a Ford Herald Templar 95 with a bar across the back .I want to put a tow bar on. Do i need to go to a Motorhome Specialist , are there any in North Devon? Can my mechanic fit a standard Ford Transit tow bar. Any help gratefully recieved. Carol and Stan Slinn.

doubt very much that a standard tranny towbar would fit.....your van is much lower bodied at the back.
if you do a search for 'motorhome tow bars' you should get quite a few results.

expect to pay around £300 to £500 depending on what you want......straight forward flange bar, full width bumper towbar, step plate towbar, scooter rack towbar......the list is endless.

there is no type approval for your van, meaning whatever is fitted doesnt have to be tested and approved (CE marked)as long as it complies with the law so its worth using a well known manufacturer.
anyone can 'cobble' one together that looks good but can it stand the stresses involved ?

i built my own but i had it professionally welded as my welding isnt too hot..:Blush:

Check that your motorhome is really capable of taking such a load.

Some have quite flimsy rear extensions or have body extensions well beyond the chassis and are not really suitable for towing.

Hi Carol and Stan, have you had any luck in sourcing a towbar for your camper? I have a 1994 van and I also want to source a towbar.
Any info is appreciated.

Hi Jimmy that post is from 2008 and they are now read only funsters, not seen their van for a few years I think it is long gone.

Too many chassis variations to be an "off the shelf" item.
consider a transit....pick up, tipper, flatbed, van, horsebox, motorhome of many variations etc....all the same chassis but the extra bits may get in the way of a "standardised" towbar

Most are individually custom built for the van at the time of purchase

Got you, I tried a standard Transit one but they're way too small for the job. Custom tow bars are likely to be very expensive and difficult to source, plus getting somebody who'll make one can't be easy.
The search goes on......
