Now I don't want to come across as a raving alcofrolic here, but does anyone have any thoughts on how thorough the customs are regarding bringing a few bottles of wine and maybe one of whisky across in the motorhome? I'll be arriving by ferry into Kristiansand.
There are so many cubby holes I guess I could squirrel away a fair amount that they would take ages to find, but I don't want my inherent honesty to give me too sweaty a pair of hands!

I'm embarrassed to say we drove into Norway via Sweden with 40 bottles of wine in the garage  I didn't really think it through. We were even stopped once by a policeman who was doing spot checks and breathalyser's

Apart from that we did not see a single customs officer or policeman

not long enough
Oh, sorry, forgot to say we had a lovely chat about Norway, he gave us a few tips on where to go and what to see locally and wished us a happy journey and sent us on our way (y)

But the important thing is did he ask if you had the wine? or any alcohol for that matter

If they don't ask it sort of makes it their fault

I am fearing the fines could be horrendous and then probably confiscated as well

Reminds me of a joke a Norwegian friend told me, not very funny but sums up Norway and the problem some of them have with alcohol.

Two Norwegians sitting in a bar in North Shields waiting for the ferry home (a much missed service).

One says to the other "Can I buy you a drink?"
The reply "I'm drinking not socialising."

Funnily enough a mate from my university days was from Norway, long before overseas students were the norm. He could afford to come to the UK as his dad had made a fortune importing home brew kits - it had made him the equivalent of a millionaire, the Norwegian government finally caught up and started to charge duty on the kits.

Took the ferry from Harwich to Esberg and drove through Denmark absolutely laden with alcohol in every locker - on way to a wedding in Jonkopping, Sweden. Customs did a brief search inside the motorhome but didnt say a word ..........

While driving up the west coast of Sweden to Oslo last summer the customs had actually closed of the road and diverted everyone through custom gates similar to airports, something to declare/nothing to declare we drove through the nothing as I hadn't paid much attention to the rules. We had two cases of Magners a few bottles of spirits so luckly we got waved through.

So the Norway is Tee total;)

We can laugh but Norway has had a huge alcohol problem and this is their way of trying to address the problem.

I love Norway and have many Norwegian friends .... personally the amount of alcohol a visitor is allowed to take in seems more than generous but then I hardly ever touch the stuff. So there is the solution, we'll travel in convoy or meet up somewhere and you can have my allowance :)

We've been regular visitors for many years. Whilst we have never ever been stopped the penalties for smuggling are stiff. We always carry 2 half bottles of Scotch to say thank you to people who have helped us (lorry driver towing us out of ditch, farmer letting us use his barn in a storm and so on. (Mrs BB doesn't allow:crying1: me spirits when we are anywhere where the drink drive laws are sensible so it's only ever used as a thank you.) It may be a false impression but the customs on the border between Finland and Norway seem to be more likely to stop and search rather than between Sweden and Norway. I've never traveled in Finland (yet) but this is what Norwegian friends have told us. I very rarely buy alcohol of any type in Norway but as Tootles has posted the cost of all drink is 'sobering' and that of spirit is positively eye watering. Personally I wouldn't attempt to squirrel anything away in Norway. Whatever, enjoy the country it's superb.(y)

I'm taking it that the allowances are per person - so 1 l spirit plus 10 bottles of wine for 2.

Question is, what do I do the second night?

Seriously, that's fine - we are likely to be there 16 days or so, although there is a civil liberty issues about being told how much I personally can drink.

and no, I never drink and drive.

A Woosh bang
I just think it sad you need to worry about how much booze you can smuggle into Norway ..

enjoy the trip with the legal limit and give your liver a holiday ..

better still have a booze free trip.. you might even enjoy it.

Rules are simple in Norway, if you are going out for a meal drink before you go and when you get home and just have water with the meal, popping over the border to buy drink is a national pastime, oh and eating out is bloody expensive as well

Possibly the cheapest way to visit the coastal towns and cities of Norway (or just for a sample of Norway) would be a cruise. Mind every Norway west coast cruise seems to call in at Bergen!
