Dilemma...high mileage? (2 Viewers)

Hi All
We're thinking of upgrading our motor home and have found what we want in our price range. The drawback at the moment is that it's done 15,000 on a 2013 plate. (Rollerteam 746). Part of us really wants to go and look at it properly (it's a long drive away) but then we are thinking just to hold on.
Would really value peoples opinions....please

15,000 isn't that high a mileage on a diesel engine. I'd be more worried about wear and tear on the foam in the cushions and seats.

Unless its an ex rental I wouldn't be too bothered about that sort of mileage.

15k miles - the engine has not been run in yet.

As Puddleduck says - interior condition is more important.

Well it's not a lot of mileage but it's a lot for a two year old van, but as long as it's been looked after I would say go and have look at it, but find out as much info as you can first

Some people have funny idea of high mileage, if it was a commercial van it would have done 40,000. Worse thing to buy is a low mileage van, they deteriorate far quicker if left standing around unused all sorts of bits size on then. The last thing you want is a Motorhome that has been left standing through the winter. One with 15000 on it is a far better buy than one with 5000, unless you like big repair bills.

Comformatic boxes don't work as well until 15000 miles has been done, they are set up to work properly with a engine that has been run which fiat consider to be 15000 miles.

150,000 isn't even high mileage for engines theses days, diesel or petrol.

15K is nothing, nowhere near run in yet. In our fleet of vehicles we have:
Iveco Daily Turbo camper, 1996 186,000 KM.
2005 Focus 1.8 diesel 128,000 miles Wife's car.
2005 Ducato SWB van, 2.0 litre JTD, 202,000 miles.
1995 Mazda MX5 1.8, 115,000 miles and gets thrashed mercilessly at hillclimb and sprint meetings, and I do mean thrashed, it lives between 3500 and 7200RPM.
Given the choice I'd always go for one with higher mileage as long as it has been serviced regularly. Don't let a few more miles than most motorhomes have done put you off.

My van had done more than that in it's first two years, mainly back and forwards to the dealer
That is definitely not high mileage if you use the MH instead of just parking it up on sites etc.

Average car mileage is somewhere around 12,000 mile per year. Motorhomes are built on a light commercial chassis that would (when its a delivery van) be expected to cover 100,000 miles per year plus. 15,000 in a year and a bit is nothing. Go for it.

A commercial vehicle chassis is designed to do in the region of 50000 miles per year for a period of 5 or 6 years, then it goes into the second hand market where it will do around half that for another 5 years before it comes into the public domain. 1500 in a couple of years on a commercial chassis is low mileage, not high.

21,000 in just over 2 years on mine.... I dont think 15k miles is a lot.. for an 18 month old MH...

Thank you all so much...to say we are grinning is an understatement!! I know we still need to have a good look at it and check everything but now it's worth the drive. Will definitely look at interior/cushions closely as really hadn't thought about that.

You could buy a 2 year old MH with 2000 mikes that has been slept in every night for the last two years, that's a lot of wear on the interior or you could buy one with 15000 on the clock that has been used for a few holidays abroad each year like spain and back or Italy.

15k barely a run to the shops and back, we've got a few volvo trucks with well over a million km on them, only had 1 clutch and hardly a spanner on the engine, come mot time they turn out less emmisions than a new MAN or MERC truck. or so mr vosa tell me.

I was wondering about cushions, mattresses & upholstery in a 'used' van, and have come to the conclusion that replacement (if necessary) would still be cheaper than buying new...

Our June 2012 registered PVC has just shy of 17000 miles on it and if we had been able to get away more it would be well over 25,000 by now probably! As has been said don't worry about 15,000, it's how it has been looked after and the actual condition that matters.

Good grief, whatever the mileage it should be like new at that age - Ours is 24 years old and the seats and upholstery and carpets are unmarked, with no sagging or rips.

Is 7,500 miles a year high? We do about that every year, Wouldn't be using it enough otherwise.

We bought our first motorhome at 3 yrs old and 38k no problems with the mechanics except egr valve (common problem at any mileage) traded it in on a new one 2 years later only lost about 2k . You would get a lot more wear on a 5k motorhome that someone has lived in for a year while their house is done up or spent 3 months at a time parked up. Mileage is no problem just forget it and look at the rest and enjoy the price it should be lower as the mileage might put a few others off just be aware it might also have a lower vale when you get rid if you use it a lot.

Maintenance is the most important thing to consider and at that mileage it's barely run in. Also at least you know it's not been standing idle something which can have a very detrimental affect on a MH

I did say it's not a lot, but the fact is most motor homes don't do anywhere near those mileages mine included but as long as it's been serviced properly it shouldn't be a problem if it has a low mileage or a highish one, I use my van regularly, just don't have to go that far to find lovely spots (and not on sites and very rarely stay for more than one night) My first van was 15 years old and had done 23,000, if it had done 7,500 miles a year it would of had over a 100,000 on the clock and I wouldn't have been interested, my second was 11 years old and had 32,000 and again if it had had 82,000 miles on it I would not have been interested

Ah, so you wouldn't have bought our Aug 2009 van, literally without a single mark on it anywhere, in March 2013 with what was it? 22,000 on the clock?

And it would have done more, had one of us not been at work for all that time. The engine had just started to loosen up and we were getting far more to the gallon when we sold it than we ever had before.

It was immaculate.

on the flipside ive just bought an 08 car with 16000 miles on it thats had 5 services it a close contest wether its had more oil or petrol

We know a couple who go to Spain at the end of Seoptember and don't return until March/April.
As a result, their 'van has about 3000 miles a year.
The 'van NEVER moves when on site in Spain.
I know which, of the two, your s or theirs I'd choose and it wouldn't be theirs.

I am on the lookout for a van to convert for myself and so long as the engine/drivetrain is good I don't really care how many miles it got on the clock-I was in a van last week 2009 yr with 252,000 miles looked almost new / dent free and drove spot on except for a crunch from 3rd to 4th gear it was only after I phoned my mate up to find the price of a new gearbox (£1200 second hand )that I walked away -Still looking for a van and anything sub 100k is a bonus in my book
