Every white van in the country that has stick on signs advertising their companies should not be covered then, total nonsense IMO.

Well in actual fact saying God is the saviour on your car isn't actually an advert but low down on the door is a web address that could be but pleeeeeeeze, just what is going on? Our MoHo has stickers on it, I better get out there now and scrape them off just in case!!!

Could you imagine the scenario if it said 'Mohamed the greatest' - the insurance company wouldn't risk being liable for a then potential racist invalidation - then the do-gooders would jump on it and the insurance company would pay out willingly - what is this country coming to?
These insurance companies will try anything to get out of paying, I have heard similar with regards to wheel trims, apparently 'a modification that could enhance desirability'.

Oh no,,,,, The smiley face of a Funster sticker....... "I'm sorry but the driver behind saw your yellow smiley funster sticker and it made him feel very happy, which led him not to brake, thus hitting you from behind, so my happy moho driving funster it's your fault" says the 'loss adjuster'.......

What a load of cobblers, aye?

Makes you wonder if it's worthwhile having insurance? Oh. I forgot! It's a legal requirement and so the bastards can screw you for the premiums and then wriggle out of paying claims.

And - actually and actively encouraged by this bunch of tits we have in government. George (the parasite) Osbourn came out with an absolute bramer recently, "I have abolished the requirement for pensioners to purchase annuities so they can do what they think right with their pension payouts".... What he was really saying was - 'Coz you is living longer there is a fair chance you will be claiming more money back from my insurance buddies than you put in which means we (sorry, they) will be losing money'. 'Nope sorry, your on your own whilst we profit from the poor souls who died early and we still have their money'.......

Another insurance Grrrrrr....

So, if you take off the nice shiney alloys and fit a set of rusty steel rims with just legal tyres, would the see that as making the vehicle undesirable and giving you a reduction in premium....

Would they hell.....

Nit-picking in the finest degree.

Some insurance companies really are the pits and stupid with it trying to claim the ciggy lighter in the back could void your insurance. Utter nonsense its probably a standard factory fitted item and when they were given the vehicle details they should have known that. As for the stickers again utter nonsense. They may like to claim it could invalidate the insurance but if ever she should be in an collision I'd like to see the idiots trying to avoid liability using this argument in court. The judge would probably go mental and could possibly award indemnity court costs to their insured

Also what about the gadgets we do buy are they saying we are expected to tell them if we have fitted heated seats, a sat nav, a dash cam etc etc. The list is endless so the answer must be no we don't but then common sense it not much of a known quantity amongst the present empoyees of insurance companies WHY? cos over the years they've got rid of the experienced staff and replaced them kids some of whom are barely out of nappies

My commercial vehicle insurers ask if my van is sign written, I asked "what difference does it make?" they said it could reduce the premium as easier to identify if stolen. It's all a game of statistics, I argued that having my van sign written would indicate my trade & the likely value of the van contents, I did suggest that I had it signed as an undertaker (it is a black van) as I didn't think that even the lowest lowlife scumbag would be likely to want to steal a corpse!

I have a sports car that is highly modified and I use a specialist insurer. They want to know what's fitted and is it performance enhancing or purely cosmetic. Fag lighters weren't mentioned.

i very much doubt that the insurers are worried that god bothering stickers make a car more likely to be stolen or in an accident. more likely they expect it to be a target for vandalism though

Reading until the end of the article suggests that as soon as someone with a brain got hold of it back at the office they throw a bucket of cold water on the story. Still I suppose it was too good a story not to run. I suppose these days the BBC has to compete with the Mail online LOL if they are to get a standstill budget.

When you buy a car second hand how do you know whats a modification and whats standard fittings.
There are so many different versions of vehicles you must be an expert to know if a cig lighter in the boot is standard for that model or an enhancement. Yet alone what wheels are fitted or wheel trims.

The insurance company basis it's pricing on risk. Every vehicle from the factory has known risks inherent in that vehicle. They also assess your risk as a person and the area you live and the use it is put to. This is all very sensible with the highest risk people being charged more.

They then say if you modify your vehicle in any way you need to notify them. "Any Way" is the key thing here. They will then assess the change in risk related to the modification.
A solar panel on the roof of your van is not going to change the risk profile at all. Putting diamond studs round the door handles will.

Stickers on a vehicle may or may not change the risk profile. Religious stickers will probably change the risk profile whereas a funster sticker or a simple pattern on the side of a motorhome is unlikely to affect it. But surely it is the insurers right to price in that risk. I am sure the insurer is not doing this on anti religion basis but purely on a profit/risk basis risk.

It's too easy in situations like this to immediately jump on the emotive responses and not consider the logical and realistic alternative views.

This is about profit/risk not religion.

I think its more down to risk. With religious nutters about your vehicle is more at risk of malicious damage if you have a religious sticker. Sad but true. They kill people over religion so to damage or destroy a car because of it is a real risk. Its a sick world.

I agree that's its about profit/loss but how do you know what's a modification when you buy second hand and what do you tell the insurance.
When you buy a second hand motorhome with an automatic satellite dish on the roof and a large solar panel are these a modification to the original vehicle, were they factory fitted or retro fitted at the dealer when the original owner first bought it or gradually added as they realised they needed it.
I wouldn't know what should be reported to the insurance and what shouldn't

I wonder what the Insurance Ombudsman's office might say in the event of a claim being refused, I expect the insurance company might be told to pay out and shut up!

Little sympathy from the insurance industry on the Jeremy Vine programme today. One point that was made by a caller though: apparently legal minimum cover is maintained but undeclared modifications might / would prevent a payout for your own and any third party damage. The overriding advice was to declare every alteration to the standard vehicle including stickers and colour changes

On TV yesterday evening an Insurance " expert" stated that, in the event of a claim, following an accident, the Insurers would have to prove that the modification was a material factor before refusing a claim. Eg the fitting of a reversing camera would not be a material factor if you were involved in a collision when travelling forwards or if another vehicle ran into your rear end.

He admitted they may try to wriggle out of paying but an appeal to the Ombudsman would " almost certainly succeed".

Make of that what you will!(n)

Since july 2009 And Still Going Strong
I had a long conversation last June/July with my insurance company. We had decided that we wanted to upgrade some stuff in/on the M/H and thought we'd best keep it all above board and pass it by the insurance company. Couple of examples:
internal cupboard with no door that when you go round a corner everything flys out, wanted to put a door matching the others on it. Insurance company said no
Rear working light so that when unloading/loading car from trailer I can see what I'm doing better. Insurance company said no.
Solar panels, insurance said only if fitted by one of there authorised suppliers, same with a wifi boost aerial.
Twin rear wheel valve extenders, insurance said that if it wasn't available as an option when new then no.
So what to do, keep your mouth shut and risk problems with insurance in a claim situation or just except that can't do the things you want to do.
To be fair they did agree a replacement sofa bed and Dinnett table as well as kitchen taps as long as same make as originals.
Cant fathom the reasons but oh well. Shawn

I know sometimes modifications cause an issue if it would make repairing / making good either harder or more expensive. Can't imagine why stickers would though unless they we're involved in the damage and had to be replaced.
