When ordering a new MH?

Got my eye on a stock one ... And have nearly convinced SWMBO on the expenditure... but she's asked what the likely deposit would be... to hold a van for... say the next 10 to 12 weeks until balance of funds becomes available?..

Have any of you Funsters had any experience with deposits that you can share :)

Cheers John

10 - 12 weeks is a long time so I would guess most dealers would want more than just a normal holding deposit for a m/h they already have in stock.

I would argue it's less time than waiting for a factory order though :).

That said.... would they buy a "normal holding deposit".. if I agreed it to be non refundable?..

Maybe Johns Cross will come on for a verdict but the dealer will probably have paid for a stock m/h but not one he puts on order.

Fair point .... well put :)

I wasn't being too serious on this point though :)

was that based on a percentage of the value of vehicle... or just a figure agreed by both?
just an agreed amount, not a percentage, though I expect the dealer had a rough percentage in mind that they'd accept

I cant see how being a MH is any different to say a car as regards to putting a deposit on for holding, especially non refundable.

You agree an amount and a time limit if the dealer doesnt want to do that then walk away.

Without seeming harsh its the dealers loss of a sale you can always find another MH, he might struggle to find another buyer as quick and committed :)

I would have thought any significant sum would do, £1000 non returnable deposit focuses the purchasers mind not to muck about which is all a holding deposit needs to do.

£500.00 on a new one about ten years ago, £2000.00 about five years ago.

May I suggest you consider the distance you are travelling to view it, it will be the same for any warranty work, assuming it comes with one. If its an "insurance" warranty, any w work may well be able to be done locally.

Don't want to put you of, but long distance warranty work is expensive.

Good luck with your project.

Thought of that....

two options....

1. There is a dealer about two hrs away... and I've seen negotiations for warranty work "transferred" to a local...

2. An excuse for a a couple of days "away" in the M/H :)

No more than £1000, remember if something happens in the 12 weeks and you are unable to go ahead you've lost that money as they will NOT give it back! If you are planning on using your 'pension lump sum' to buy it please check when you will be able to actually get hold of the money as due to the likely high demand there may be some delays in it coming through.

3rd option ... is there a dealer with the MH you are interested in more locally which you could have a mooch around to check it is DEFINITELY the one you want before you travel so far?

in this day and age I would not be giving a large deposit to anyone:cautious: IF you dont know what the companies financials are like...you can credit check for free on line. I remember a few years ago a company asked me for a large deposit (not motorhome) I checked their financials, they had less in the bank then I had in my current account..so they were told where to go!:censored:

best option is to wait until you have the cash and barter £1000 off the price.

Purchased mine in September 2013. I agreed the deal over the phone with a set delivery date which was 10 weeks approx. I paid a £1000 deposit but used my credit card (gave me insurance). I had to amend the date due to a delay in releasing the funds but this wasn't a problem.

I agree. If it's meant to be your MH it will still be there and the dealer will be looking to get it cleared through, if not, you will be free to have the cash ready for a quick purchase once you find the one you are meant to have.

Ask them but offer as little that you can cos if you don't buy you'll not get it back. I would suggest offering no more than £250. Which I consider is enough to show you're a serious buyer
