We have finally made the decision to find a companion. I suppose my birthday next month has triggered the search.
Spent a few hours at Battersea dogs home today.
We registered then looked around , we saw a small female dog described as a " mongrel" it said she had a few issues with other dogs and strangers. She was very friendly with us.
We met up with one of the volunteers and went through the dogs background. The owner who brought her in, bought her being told it was a chihuahua  she's more like a terrier type. The owner said she did have issues with strangers and other dogs , she tried to bite the dogs she met and with strangers she would growl, the reason she was given up was that it kept bullying her other dog.
Her behaviour was confirmed by the volunteer as they do their own assessment.
We decided against her due to her behaviour towards other dogs as we have family who stay with us and bring their dogs and also I want a dog I can let off the lead.
Now back at home and feeling bad about not bringing her home .
I was surprised at how few dogs there were to be viewed , I thought there would be hundreds. We saw less than twenty.
Majority of the dogs were staffy type, we were told any small dogs that come in are snapped up and if they do hang around then there is generally a few issues with them.
We need to email them daily to see if they have anything suitable brought in.
The search continues. :)

If you 'do' Facebook, there are a lot of pages devoted to rescue centres or specific breeds.
We are currently looking for a companion for our cocker spaniel, Alf (who we found in a local rescue centre 11 years ago)

Have a look at Labrador Rescue North West. Both of ours came from there, a lab and a small labradoodle. www.homealabrador.net
Also check out the link to the Paralimni Dog Pound in Cyprus. They send quite a few over to the UK to their forever homes.

Small world, I'm a supporter too! We live very close to the rescue and I help out whenever I can. If you read the forums look out for scubakim - the choc lab Murphy and Amy the labradoodle.

Will do, this is the first year that I didn't order a calendar but I've given the odd tenner every so often. Glenys and her team do a wonderful job. If I could remember my password might log in again, I haven't for a while. I've been tempted so many times to fill in an adoption form but I know it's not feasible, would have to get an even bigger motorhome.:D

We have had a rescue dog for about 10 years and we love him even though he can be aggressive to other dogs, but he is fine with family and friends dogs. Have a look on Dogs Blog, I was on the site about 4 weeks ago and saw a dog that I fell in love with. Looked again tonight and she is still there so I filled a form in and who knows we may have another addition to the family.

They think she is a Siberian husky x German shepherd, about 12 / 14 weeks old. Found tied to a tree in the corner of a field in Scotland around Christmas. How can anyone do that? Andrea.

Good Morning Kevin, your title says it all "The search has began" no matter how cute or guilty you feel for leaving her there is it really the dog for you and the life style you live, travelling out and about in parks you want a companion not a challenge and stress.

I say this because many many years ago we had a little terrier like that his name was Titch OMG if he got out the only way to get him was to get the car out drive then open the door he would jump in, we took him to the beach on a long lead for exercise he went straight to a guy sunbathing he cocks his leg up and peeded all over him, the list goes on we took him to training classes wasted our time in the end it was him or me and we he had to go back to the kennels, before he made me a nervous wreck.

After that we bought a Boxer pup, beautiful dog who travelled everywhere with us a pleasure to have and a real companion who we has until she was 11years old, loved her to bits.

So the question is do you want to get yourself a worry and a challenge or a dog that you can enjoy because there will be one out there that is looking for a new companion without having to many issues .

I know some people don't mind taking on dogs with issues but for that it's a different ball game.

I agree with Carol too - we've had numerous dogs, all except the last 2 were from rescue centres or unwanted, the last 2 were still 'second hand' though:

Lily was a kiddies 'toy' and when she grew up a bit the kiddie lost interest and she wasn't bothered with at all by anyone ... we got her at 4 months and she hadn't been socialised, vaccinated, trained ... nothing.

Tazzy our latest was also part of a family but this time with an older child and was loved to bits, they only parted with her because the could no longer be with her as much as she needed as the chap had got a new job with a different shift pattern so he was no longer there during the day.

We did consider rescue dogs when we got these last 2 but they can be hard work and after having so many in the past we decided to go down another route.

Here's our rescue Newf. Rescued via the Newfoundland rescue org. Wouldn't be without her now, she is what keeps our family together. She came with many problems and we have ironed them out bit by bit but she was only 12 months when we got her. She's a lot fatter now and also a lot older (shes 7) not a day goes by where I regret her coming on board in to my crazy family.
