Looking to cross to France about 23/02/15 so checked ferry prices, they have increased on last year but P&O seam to have tripled theirs.

P&O Dover Calais single 8.5 m MH £135
DFDS Dover Calais £89
Myferrylink £50
Eurotunnel £87 unfortunately we cannot use it as our gas tank is too big
DFDS Newcastle Amsterdam £179 inc cabin

If we head to Italy Newcastle is our best option as it saves over 300 miles.

Asel could be correct depending on size.....

Fixed gas containers (tanks, etc.)
For the purposes of this text, this means fixed containers that are permanently installed or fixed in a vehicle and are refillable from outside the vehicle.

The quantity of gas is limited to 47kg (or approximately 93 litres) maximum for a single container and to 50kg (or approximately 99 litres) maximum in the case of several containers. Each container must be no more than 80% full.

The quantity will be checked via the gauge or remote indicator but if neither are present, the vehicle will be refused.

1st time i went that route was 15 years ago with a car......

Best part of £500 with evening meal and breakfast in an inboard steel coffin with twin bunks.
vowed never to cross their palm again.

Cant remember cost last time.....no car, free upgrade one way to a double outboard cabin.....honeymoon in Brugge 12 years ago.

Camping cheques are worth £100, so makes the ferry only £225 return including upgrade to 4 berth outside cabin. Food and drink is extra but some people just take something on with them if they are bothered.

Following the start of the thread, I phoned the caravan club, regarding the Hull to Zeebrugge sailing, , I am not a member, and they explained, very well, that traveling on a Sauturday or Sunday night you pay as if you were a car . I guess because most lorries can't travel on the continent on a Sunday. A good saving, and if you buy 7 camping cheques at £14.95 the ferry crossing works out cheaper.
If you book directly the cost are much much more.
I will be paying my £46 to join the caravan club

That's a lot of money in my book. The cost of 300 miles in fuel one way would be about £60 (depending obviously on price of fuel and your mpg), so with the MyFerry crossing at £50, that's £110, a saving of £69 on the Newcastle to Amsterdam crossing ...

If you work that out as an hourly rate for the time you spend driving the 300 miles then it starts to take on a different spin though.. although for me Folkestone or Dover are my best options anyway distance wise.

Who's going to check? On our last trip someone in a hi-vis in the car park stuck his head in the window and asked "is your gas off?" and then scribbled something on our windscreen hanger. Nobody in either direction was interested beyond asking that question.
