Our 5th gear is slipping out of gear. We have been told it's a worn cog and needs to go into a transmissions place to be looked at. Does anyone have any advice on this please? Anywhere around Stalybridge that won't 'rip us off'. It's been under the care of a place in Glossop this past year and they made the recommendation!

It may well not be the 5th gear or indeed the selector but could just as easily be the linkages worn
A pain in the bum job but about a 1/5th of the price of a gearbox jobby

Know it's not directly the answer you asked but in the meantime don't forget not to put it into 5th gear for the first couple of miles as the 5th is a add on (or something like that) and the gear box oil does not get to it for the first couple of miles giving quite a few people problems with it. Quite a bit in the search thingy on Fun about it.

Not long enough!
I had a new 5th gear put in, but instead of 40mph at 2000 revs, does 60 at 2000 revs.is a proper Renault part.

It's a 'through the wheel-arch' job.

Separate housing, bolted to gearbox.

Done a few over the years,It can be done through the wheel arch, if its jumping out of gear prob worn fork people rest their hand on gear lever when in 5th and it wears the brass on the fork. Will need stripping to check.

The damage to the engagement dogs visible in the photo is definitely not due to a lack of lubricant, the first signs of which would be damage to/excessive wear of/overheating of the teeth of the gears. The dogs do nothing once the gear is engaged so damage only occurs during a gear change. For this to happen the syncro cup, cone, or baulk ring, has failed or is badly worn.

Not sure how you diagnose with no vehicle info other than Ducato, but our 01 Ducato 2.8jtd had the dreaded 5th gear problem, but on the first day of a three week trip, so we just carried on, 4th is more than up to the job, 5th is mainly an overdrive gear.

We got it fixed at a place in Wakey for £160ish, sold it soon after.

We also lost 5th & reverse in the 07 Relay, but that was due to 2 bolts working lose and falling out from the dash levers mounting, easy fix.

Is the 5th gear fault only on the 2.5+ engined models ?

Mines a 1.9 Normally aspirated Fiat diesel 1989.
It doesn't have the black steel end plate as is all aluminium & cannot be removed without supporting engine as the end of gear box is sandwiched by the engine/gearbox mount bracket.
I'll have to have a good look.
