Has anyone else heard of a law being passed to do away with grandfathered rights and make us all comply with Europe??
If such a thing were to happen I assume a lot of people would be caught out.

no link, Terry mentioned he had heard something so I thought I would follow it up rather than worry about it.

Rumours probaly invented by the same folks who every year say there will be a seperate motorhome driving test and yet another for m/h's over 7500kg without the work based parts.
grandfather rights eligibility ended 17 years ago and the average lower age of a holder today may be 35 to 40years old.
only leaves around 30 years and it will self expire anyway.

I was talking to a mate xmas eve and looking at a ambulance to convert for myself when he mentioned it to me -said that a law had been passed to comply with a euro legislation that says something along the lines of removing GF rights from us to comply with these who did not have them -Again he was confident he had it right and that to keep the GF rights you had to take a test -No Idea where the info came from but he is usually right on such things -anyway it was enough to put me off buying until I suss it all out -so now looking at 3.5t vans --small market for converted ambulances that could be smaller still if over 3.5t

This is i think what the fuss is about its for professional drivers

What is Driver CPC

It’s a certificate of professional competence for professional drivers. The Driver CPC is a compulsory requirement which has been introduced across the European Union to maintain high driving standards, improve the knowledge and skills of drivers and enhance road safety. All professional Lorry Drivers (drivers of 7.5 tonnes and above) must now hold a Driver CPC qualification (unless granted grandfather rights until September 2014).

When Must I Have Completed my Driver CPC By?

Lorry drivers that have held their license (C, C1, CE, C1E) prior to 10 September 2009 will have acquired rights until the 9 September 2014. If you wish to keep your driving licence and continue driving for a living beyond this date, you will need to complete 35 Hours of periodic training and be issued a DCPC Card by September 2014. New drivers coming into the profession will need to pass the initial qualification to gain their vocational driving license and qualify for their Driver CPC. Then the driver is required to take 35 hours of periodic training every five years from the date they have passed the initial qualification.

Think back how long DVSA prattled on about scrapping the tax disc.......

Do you think there would be no mention of a far wider ranging issue.......

Businesses who only run vehicles up to 7500kg for the reason below.
Commercial drivers who only have C1e on g/f rights and dont want full class C or cant justify the cost, the driver may already be in his late 50's or 60's.

The thousands of 3500kg + motorhome drivers.

Ok...take a test !
Along with the tens of thousands on the waiting list.

IT WONT HAPPEN !

DVSA....still as incompetant as ever.......
you can call a pig pork, but you cant educate either.

Look at the above highlighted bits.

In the first sentence it states 7500kg and OVER
in the next it states C1 and C1E.........both of which restrict weight to UNDER 7500kg

We know what they mean....but they obviously dont, or maybe the scribe with the quille and parchment wasnt sure so made it up.

Aug 09 to date 9,000 miles!
Well IF they do it, to 'everyone' - it will be phased in anyway.

As I've said before - my 'full' UK driving licence had the C1 etc etc entitlement as I passed my test before the cut-off date - just like everyone else who passed before that date. However I am Type 1 diabetic, so it is renewable - free - every three years subject to an extensive renewal form and medical and eyesight info and my signing a declaration to say I promise to test my blood glucose at the proscribed intervals using a glucometer with a 3-month memory - the evidence on which could and would be used in evidence (either for or against me) should anything untoward occur.

Meanwhile before last renewal (3 years ago! - it's due again shortly) they had brought in the rule (to comply with diabetic driving laws in the EU) to say if we wanted to keep our C1 we could - as long as we had a (satisfactory) medical EVERY YEAR in order to keep it. If we didn't keep it but wanted it at a later date - then we'd have to pass a C1 driving test AND still have the annual medical. The medicals for these at the time (ie non-vocational driving of anything over 3.5 tonne) would have cost me £145 a time (it's cheaper for vocational)

Now - I knew this upfront because it had been publicised in the 'diabetic' press let alone the normal one - our charity, Diabetes UK - had also made sure they publicised it to 'us' - on their website, in Newsletters etc. So we'd discussed it and decided what to do when it did happen.

So - never having driven anything near that large - not even a SMALL van of any type - only cars ever - Mk1 & Mk2 Escort Estates don't count LOL - in my life - frankly I was more than happy to let it lapse.

My point is - if it happens it won't be overnight - so you'll all have to think about it - and decide what to do.

After all - any of you could become diabetic and need insulin even if it doesn't happen any other way - and though if Type 2 you might have time to consider it - Type 1 can strike at ANY age and being over 50 certainly does NOT prevent it. And you wouldn't have time to consider your flippin driving licence at all or discuss it with anyone in that case - there is no other treatment and you're stuck with it - or die. Please yourself .... LOL

Just -'Don't panic Mr Mainwaring' - is my advice!

The CPC is probably what your friend is on about @Terry As mentioned by others grandfather rights do expire on that. But it is not really grandfather rights as such just a time limited exemption for existing professional drivers.

Yes,certainly for commercial use, stuff in garden centres etc. tends not to be quite as potent!

http://www.pesticides.gov.uk/guidan...-Updates-2013/June/Grandfather-rights-changes
Only reason I asked is that they've done the same here except that from January 1st 2015 no one can use ANY weedkillers etc; without having taken a course .Nor will they sell you anything. Course is about 120€ & the fines START from 7000€!! :xeek::xeek: they do know haw to dish a fine out here.

Must be EU regs.

It seems that the Spanish will apply any law that they can make money from! I think someone on here said you can't wash your car on the road or even on your drive.
The French of course won't take a blind bit of notice. We had a saying, we had BSE the French had a JCB!

Most of the am is as I understand it can be downgraded to 3.5 tonne after the equipment is removed. Mine started at 4.28, is now 2.8 converted even with the older fibreglass body. They are on 3.5 chassis updated to carry a lot of one-sided equipment and personnel

Grandfather rights are removed when you reach 70 years. Also I was told that the competence test for MH's has not yet been introduced by the UK

I Have a C1E but what happens if you want to drive a bigger MH what do you do for a driving test and what licence do you need to have?? Do you get a professional licence and have to do the CPC as well.
There is no licence for Motorhomes, only for commercial vehicles by weight, so what happens to a newbie?

I was reading some while back that if you were banned from driving or had licence suspended under 'totting up' that it was reinstated afterwards Without all the other categories which were withdrawn. Didn't really go in to it so don't really know how much truth there is in it ?
