Hi everyone. Our motorhome is now SORNed, and the on-road insurance has expired. Shortly, a garage will come along and take it to their compound until April 5th next year. Whilst there, it will have the cambelt, pulleys etc etc done and will, hopefully be MOTd when we get back from Overseas. HOWEVER - here's the point. I want to insure against risks whilst in storage. For example, fire, theft and break-in.
I can't find anyone interested in quoting.
Any ideas or past experience?
many thanks and a merry Xmas.
Steve

Hmmm, this subject is clearly difficult! No replies follows exactly the same pattern as all the insurers i've contacted!

Can't really give you anything absolute but you need a specialist broker. Can only suggest you speak directly to AIB, or Comfort, mention you are a Funster and see if they can come up with some suggestions. They were helpful to me when I had a storage insurance "difficulty" (don't ask, different circumstance).Sometimes a bit of persistence is needed.

Good luck

Just wondering why you didn't renew the insurance - all you'd have to do is notify them of the change of parking location. It'd then be their choice if they'd accept the new location.

And a number of insurers let you "downgrade" to fire and theft only.

Well, fair enough and I take your points. However- I am reluctant to spend 500 quid plus to insure a vehicle against ZERO on-road risk. It will be stored for 3.5 months, then remain SORNed until May.Total 5 months plus.
Of course insurers dont want to cover the van less expensively- their ideal world is to take money for no risk.
I'm not working and do not claim benefits, where the heck do they expect the money to come from?

Your insurance is not just for on-road risk -it is for off-road risk too! Most motorhomes do pretty small mileage so I would hazard a guess that a good portion of the premium is to cover the off-road time.

I hate insurance and insurance companies but this statement isn't helpful. Insurance companies are in the business of making money not supporting people.

The risk to the insurance company is the same whether you intend to drive it or not. If the MH is stolen it is on the road, potentially leading to much higher costs to them than if it is being driven sensibly by you. If you put it in proper storage then there would likely be a reduction in cost, especially when you say the mileage next year will be (presumably) substantially lower. In the garage compound, assuming it isn't a registered storage site, the risk of theft or damage from other vehicles moving about will be higher than if the van was in your care etc etc

I would go with the above.. mention change of where vehicle is being kept, mention mileage reduction and renew.

I can confirm that. My insurers wanted to increase my premium by 75%, just because I moved the storage to a (much) higher risk area, even though from a practical point of view it was actually a much more secure site. Happily common sense prevailed, but it proved makems point.

you should continue the insurance, having the money or not is more a question of do you have the funds to continue motorhoming !!!, insurance is a basic must have all year round sorn or not
