Hi, we are catching the Santander ferry on the morning crossing and have to be there early. Can anyone suggest a good place to overnight not far from the port, as we will be travelling down from Yorkshire.

You may be able to spend the night at the port Ginny.
When we were on a night ferry, vehicles for the following
mornings sailings were queuing in the embarkation lanes
for the night.

When we went to Santander using that route. We parked in travel lodge Carpark which is on the roundabout right by the port.
We had an evening meal there and asked for permission. No problems at all.
Just about 200 yards from the Port.

Coming back the other way and arriving at 17:00 we stayed at the CC site near Portsmouth. However, if you are leaving early in the morning they put you in a special area. It is about 20 minutes from the port but traffic can be horrendous around there so leave lots of time if travelling at the rush hour.

Brisey.

Thanks Brian, that sounds like a plan, if we can't then we will try the Travel lodge and enjoy a good meal!

Car parks near the Churchilian on Portsdown Hill Road just outside Portsmouth are fine for overnight near the ferries. Just google churchilian for exact location on google maps

We tried the car park east of the Churchillian (the one with the burger van) last month after arriving back on a late ferry from Le Havre. At 11:00pm on a Friday night, the place was full with about 40 cars, all with steamed-up windows. ;)

Not quite the quiet night we were expecting so we moved on ... :)

We went to Port Solent Marina early evening, no more than 10 mins away, and then drove to the port around 9.30 pm and stopped overnight in the check-in lanes. Apart from bright lights it was fine. Others have said that if you are near the refrigerated lorries it can be a bit noisy. I believe you can also stop over at the marina.

Ditto Falcon 269. Stopped there early November just to see the view and left at 18:30 by which time there were several cars parked and people walking around with torches looking into the windows! Probably not a good spot to overnight anymore, unless you like that sort of thing;).
Ditto Geejay. Moved to Port Solent for a meal and then to the port at 21:45 about 20 other MH already there. Slept well no noise and no issues with staying overnight, even shown where to park by security.
As this was my first winter away and visit to the port I was a bit apprehensive but would have no hesitation doing same next year.

We were told by Brittany in September that we could park in the ferry lane from 10pm so we parked outsjde Morrisons with the lorries until then and overnighted at the port. We were woken at 5am by the kiosk operator as we were first in the queue
