Just got my reminder and now i see the confusion from a previous post.

I want to tax for 6 months......top box on form £156.75

If i tax by DD the cost is just £149.63 yet over the page it states 6mth and 12mth (monthly) DD attracts a 5% surcharge which in this case brings the cost to almost the same as box one....£149.63 + 5% near as damn it = £156.75

I am convinced DVSA have cocked up once again and the two figures are transposed into the wrong box.

If this is the case then DVSA are gaining money by false representation.
anyone not wanting DD will tick the top box thinking they are paying the cash sum but are in fact paying the DD cost....£149.63 + 5%

So which box did you tick and did the actual cost tally with the box ?

the 5% surcharge only applies to 6 month one off DD payments and 12 monthly DD payments

So it seems Jim.....but the stated price is £149.63 which includes the 5% surcharge as does the 12 monthly installment DD.....£285 + 5% = £299.25

Take the 5% off the stated 6 monthly DD and the true 6 month charge is £142.11....yet in box one its £156.75 one off cash price

I predict within 2 years the 6 month option will no longer be available....either DD or cash.

It will be either 12 months cash or 12 months DD or 12 monthly payments.

It appears we are being penalised for buying every 6 month cash and given the option (albeit temporary) to pay every 6 months by DD at a greatly reduced rate.

Once they hook you on DD then change the period most arent going to bother cancelling and paying cash so in my case i would pay £299.25

The confusion is because the 6 months cash option attracts a surcharge of 10%, not 5%.

Cash rates:
12 months tax = £285
6 months tax = (285/2) + 10% = 142.50 + 14.25 = £156.75

Direct debit rates:
12 months tax = £285
6 months tax = (285/2) + 5% = 142.50 + 7.13 = £149.63
12 monthly payments - 285 + 5% = 285 + 14.25 = £299.25

Thanks Graham.

I know someone with more than sawdust holding their ears apart would get to the bottom of it.

So....they are charging you for the privelidge of using what every other provider classes as a free service ...... DIRECT DEBIT.

Not as if it involves credit for a one off DD payment, is it.

I taxed for 12 months recently as usual but before this new option came in I did tax for six months to change my annual renewal period so the RFL didn't expire in the period I was likely to be away. I know what I mean.

There is no difference in price for the one off 12 month options. Both are £285 however you pay it.

The extra costs come in if you want to have 6 months tax or pay monthly for your 12 months tax.

No, they are charging you (as they always did) a premium for not paying the full 12 months tax up front - but they have reduced the charge from 10% to 5% if you pay by DD.

On and off for many years.
I have done 6 months so that the MOT, insurance and VED aren't all due in the same month. Otherwise always 12 months VED.

Query solved now.......but it did appear the two six month prices were transposed into the wrong tick boxs.

And with DVSA/DVLA's track record for getting things wrong it wouldnt surprise me in the slightest.
