Mr (not very) reckless & I are retiring next April and I cannot wait to get on the road in (new to us) MH. I'm addicted to this site and everyone seems to be doing it *now*. I keep dropping hints but hubby won't bring the date forward :( but my list of must-visit places is growing daily. Love to read everyone's posts and trying very hard not to be jealous. Hope to meet some of you....eventually. Karen

Come on then, share your list.

It would make very boring reading for experienced MH travellers, mainly particular aires including one we passed by last year (Coulon, France) not realising what a pretty area it was. I think we're going to have to learn the trick of 'go with the flow'.

I too am additted to this site but you only have a few months to wait and if your like me, the planning stage is nearly as good as the doing. Have a "must do list" but don't stick to it to much because sometimes the unexpected can lead to that serendipity moment when you find something or somewhere you did not really expect. (y)

Don't be too ambitious - we did Belgium, Germany, Austria and down to the Amalfi Coast before coming back through Mont Blanc and up through France last year - 4000 miles. We had a brilliant time and basically kept moving south because weather wasn't brilliant, so did all that in 5 weeks. In hindsight it was too much to do and we will be taking two months to do a lot less next year!

Whatever you do - have fun! (y)

We did our first trip to France in our first MH last year, it rained for almost the whole week and we decided we needed a MH with more space/comfort. Shortly after, while buying a small item in a dealer shop, browsed their stock and impulse-bought our current MH. It seems a sin for him to be parked up most of the time.

This sounds absolutely fab - but did you drive down the actual Amalfi coast road??:Eeek::Eeek:

I got a very good tip from vwalan last week which was don't do "point to point" by which he meant picking a destination and then just driving there, ignoring potentially interesting places you might pass on the way. Satnavs encourage this method of travelling although I must admit I find ours very useful but learning the skill of slowing down and stopping before you might have planned is a skill well worth acquiring. Of course you might just want to bash down to the south of Spain and stay in the same place for a few months and if that's your thing enjoy it. But there are lots of interesting places all over Europe which aren't necessarily on the coast or well covered in guide books.

We came across this extraordinary place completely unexpectedly while in northern Spain last month, but we were too busy heading for our planned destination to stop and explore. We won't make that mistake again I hope on our next trip.

Yes we did - not for the fainthearted! Stayed at Marina Del Cantone, which was as close as we could get to Positano, Amalfi and Capri. Thought we would get a boat over but had just missed the one for Capri on our arrival and Positano and Amalfi were due to go the day after we left! So we just chilled, the site has its own tiny little beach and a shop and restaurant - lovely!

The coast road was hairy, but the views were spectacular, and we drove through tiny little villages in our 6 metre A class no problem. On the way back we were going to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa, but I was navigating and followed the brown tourist signs, forgetting that they were for pedestrians! Went down ever narrow streets into the middle of Pisa, and met a blind left hand turn with a queue of cars behind us - when we turned the corner I thought we would have to live there for the rest of our lives - it was SOOOOO narrow and a queue of cars backing us up so we couldn't reverse out! We pulled the wing mirrors in and I stood in the footwell with my head out of the window guiding us through! I still haven't confessed to my mistake!!!

Just another adventure - we got out again and nobody died - result!!

This is why I love this site, so many fantastic tales. I'm probably too cowardy-custard to do the Amalfi coast road but we did drive across a cobbled pedestrian square in Dieppe following the satnav (sort of) while Mr r shouted "where shall I go" and I shrugged and avoided looking at the locals staring at the mad english couple. Oh how we laughed....afterwards.

I think most of the European locals look at a motorhome left up the suwannee river without a paddle with a resigned shrug, knowing full well the navigator has made a mistake but think oh well, 'c'est la vie', questa è la vita, así es la vida, and go about their business, it's only stressed out, impolite british drivers that get all het up about a genuine mistake!

@cliffandger

Geraldine, thanks for replying.....we went on a coach trip from a cruise ship to Sorrento and Amalfi along the coast road - oh actually got travel sick so I can't see us doing that again quickly :wub: It's not like you can drive fast either is it - you have to stop every 20 yards to let the lorries/cars/tankers past whilst also trying to keep an eye out for the mopeds zipping between everyone:Eeek:

As you say, the area is beautiful though and we would love to visit properly - I just need to work on him a bit::bigsmile:

We loved the Amalfi Coast, but made sure we left early in the morning to dodge most of the traffic - we left on a Sunday and the amount of cars and scooters heading into the area was horrendous! We also stayed for five days on Lake Garda, not the commercialised bit but on a campsite in between Garda and Bardolino - beautiful. It was our first time in Italy, and apart from the appalling state of their roads, we loved it!

Oh yes we recognise that, put our roads into perspective last year going to Venice. Still a wonderful country though.:)
