Wee have a 2 burner Smev hob in our Possl. One burner works just fine, but the other is temperamental - sometimes ignites ok, sometimes won't stay alight at all. Gas supply is ok so it must be a problem with the cut-out thing that pokes into the flame (excuse technical description :) ) I guess.

Any ideas welcome - maybe the 'thing' needs replacing?

The thing is called a thermo couple, the job of which is to cut the gas supply if no heat from a flame.
Ours plays up from time to time but if you keep the knob depressed for longer than usual when lighting it seems to work ok after. Until the next time

Have a similar problem with my Grill, will not stay alight for more than 20 seconds and convinced it's the thermal couple. Solution, simple's we don't use it.

as said..

make sure the tip of the thermocouple is in the hot part of the flame.. ie the blue tip..

also check that the other end the TC for tightness...

If it still 'plays up' it may need a new thermocouple

Thanks! Yes that's my conclusion too but would need to remove oven and I'm neither competent or qualified to do this work and happy to leave well alone. And, i'm not paying a load of cash just to have a simple screw out screw in done.
Think I'd get screwed myself LOL

I had the same problem with a smev hob and had to hold the button in for some time. If it lights and then goes out when you release the button, or soon after, it sound like a thermal couple problem.

Can't help with the oven but if you want to edit just look along the bottom of your post - should give the option of 'edit' on the left hand side(y)

I'll try that - always did like a cost-free solution :)

If it doesn't work, looks like a new thermocouple.

Our hob used to do that, like Gus said, just redo the push on connections to the burner control taps.

Thermocouples are generic & usually cost £7 - £15. The push-on connectors on the gas control are what triggers the spark. The thermocouple connection is rather like a pipe connection but is in fact electrical.

The ignitor on mine is on a seperate switch, so that would make the one on the bottom of the gas control the thermocouple? and yes it is more like a pipe but still has a push on connector.
