You should be able to charge your devices from your 12 volt battery so the solar panel would be to recharge the 12 volt battery. If you need a solar panel the easiest is to stick 100 or 120 watts on the roof but otherwise a 60 or 80 watt portable solar should do OK keeping you topped up.

Thank you, however the type of panels I am considering are the ones you can plug the appliances directly into so can be used independently when away from the van.

The ones you mention that you plug directly into are very small low output for backpackers hardly worth the bother

Size matters. You've got to need at least a foot square, better bigger. Modern smart phones have serious batteries inside. You need 2A at 5V at least to get the job done.

Portable solar for charging is useless. As a scout leader, I have seen several types tried out. Personally, I carry the likes of this in the ruck sack.

Thank you for the advice , I don't think I'll pursue the portable solar option for charging I pad, mobiles etc. Asking the question has been very worthwhile ,many thanks to all who have replied.

If you need a solar panel manufactured in solar panels factory the easiest is to stick 100 or 120 watts on the roof but otherwise a 60 or 80 watt portable solar should do OK keeping you topped up.
