Thank you, however the type of panels I am considering are the ones you can plug the appliances directly into so can be used independently when away from the van.You should be able to charge your devices from your 12 volt battery so the solar panel would be to recharge the 12 volt battery. If you need a solar panel the easiest is to stick 100 or 120 watts on the roof but otherwise a 60 or 80 watt portable solar should do OK keeping you topped up.

Thank you, that's useful to know. The ones you mention that you plug directly into are very small low output for backpackers hardly worth the bother

12W 1400ma 1.4 amp midday, mid summer full sunshine rest of the time days to charge an ipad if not weeks.
Thank you for information,it's all helping.Size matters. You've got to need at least a foot square, better bigger. Modern smart phones have serious batteries inside. You need 2A at 5V at least to get the job done.

Thank you for the advice , I don't think I'll pursue the portable solar option for charging I pad, mobiles etc. Asking the question has been very worthwhile ,many thanks to all who have replied.Portable solar for charging is useless. As a scout leader, I have seen several types tried out. Personally, I carry the likes of this in the ruck sack.
