We are off to Portugal in September as well. My starting point for planning was the Rough Guide to Portugal. It has several pages of "highlights" from which I chose the places we wanted to see and then with a couple of campsite books and the ACSI book plotted out a route. I haven't put dates on anything as it is very weather dependant - if it is wet we will skip the places in the North and head south.

We toured the Algarve this January and February, the ACCI campsites are quite good but the aires are better and a lot cheaper and usually closer to the towns than the campsites. There is no need to use any payage motorway as the roads are reasonable along as you do not drive to fast. Wild camping is also possible at quite a few places.

We enjoyed our time at the Chicken Run as well.

We stayed at
Parque Campismo Ria Formosa Unipessoal Lda
Quinta da Gomeira – Cabanas de Tavira
8800-591
Portugal

Site is clean and quiet, not to far from the beach and local restauarants, close to the train station. That railway runs along the Algarve.

Pedro's also gets great reports but I dont have a link for them.

Hope this helps (y)

Many thanks for your input, I think we will make the rio Formosa our first camp site when we arrive in portugal via Seville
Cheers Mark

I've used airs in France before, are the ones in Spain similar ?
Is they a book of the locations ?
Thanks again

Hi,
We are planning to go in October for six weeks just sorting out phones and wifi. Ordered the books and maps as above post. Can I ask which sim are you taking for your phone and are you bothering with wifi boosters etc?

No help I'm afraid, I will be taking my EuropaSIM but they are no longer available for new customers. Where this doesn't work I will use my O2 mobile as a hotspot. This is OK for checking emails but not for general browsing.
Never bothered with a WiFi booster as too many sites charge a fortune for their WiFi in my experience, although others seem to get on with them.

Looks like we are in limbo land with the sim card. All the deals seem to be suspended pending the new EU directive to end roaming charges next year. Will check out the payg sim card deals when in Portugal at the local shops. Pity Three don't do Portugal yet.
I'm with Virgin and they want an arm and a leg for data.
