We need to get some roof bars for our Hymer in order to carry our kayaks. Any suggestions on type or supplier gratefully received?:blusher:

I'm a newbie
How will you get onto your roof when you are traveling, will you carry ladders?

As RS_Rob said, telescopic ladder is the way we are going. Just need to find the right rails to start with. There doesn't seem much choice, other than Fiamma.

One point to consider is to not have the bars too close to the roof. Mine were factory fitted on our Laika and there's a really small gap about 1.5cm in-between the roof and the bar, this makes it difficult in some cases to use them and it would have been better to have them sitting slightly prouder. Most kits I've seen are pretty much modular ALU profiles cut to length with end stops.

over a Year Yay................
A previous owner fitted a solar panel under the roof bars on ours, I can just get the straps between & keep the boats close to the sides.

I am hoping that we may see some at Malvern show, although I have to say I don't recall seeing roof rails and bars at shows before.

Don't know if your van has side rails on it like mine but if it has and you know a welder what I did was used a second hand set of roof bars for an estate car cut in half then I had a section of steel box section welded in the centre of them cost me 45 in total ( bars ÂŁ25 of gumtree -ÂŁ20 to my mate for welding) easy removed good roof clearance and I expect they're much stronger than bought ones :)

No we have no rails at all. I would love to know about the quality and strength of the Fiamma ones. We will be carrying two kayaks and sometimes a 15.5ft open canoe. Don't seem to be able to find any feedback on the Fiamma offerings.

many many years! since I was a kid
have you looked at commercial van roof racks? the ones as fitted to BT vans and the like would be ideal. failing that buy lengths of aluminium box section an some angle to build a bespoke rack

sikaflex and stainless screws to hold short pieces of angle to the roof and bolt the box section made into a ladder layout to that. that way you can guarantee your big boat will fit

You might also give some thought as to how you will get the canoes up there too, especially the large one, a single unfixed telescopic ladder could prove quite dangerous!

The ladder is for getting the person on the roof, not the boats, they are hauled up using a rope, with protection on the van to stop it getting scratched.
