I am running the rooftop aircon 24/7 at the moment trying to keep the inside of the van bearable. I have all windows closed and the door but its still 30 deg in here. Am I doing something wrong and how much electric do these things use.

What make of Aircon is it, we have a Dometic 2000 unit and recently had it running on a 6amp hookup, I was worried we may trip the unit but it was ok.
As to if it is working properly, is the delivery air from the aircon vents very cold ? it should be, if it is not maybe the compressor is not kicking in or is not set to run.

Have got it running at half speed with the thermostat set to max cold. The compressor is kicking in and its blowing cold. I dont want to put it on full speed in case it trips the lecky. Have all the window blinds drawn and its like being in a cave, but still hot as the hobs of hell. Its an Easy cool by Waeco and when on the road draws power from its own inverter. When on site it draws power from the hookup.

One year. A whole one!
Do you have a manual for it, Dave? That'd give you the full-load current and should let you establish if running it on full speed will cause a trip.

What's the external temperature? Are you in full sun and, if so, are you able to move somewhere with shade?

Another option, albeit an old one, is to place wet towels over open windows. You'll get evaporative cooling, assuming there's a breeze.

I do have a manual, but the problem is its in German. The external temp is now to hot to measure in full sun. One side of the van is in full sun until lunchtime then the other side gets it. I do have the awning out to try and get some peace but its becoming increasingly difficult. The nights are now becoming unbearable. The 670 has an evaporator aircon which did seem to cope better. I have not been subjected to this type of punishment for several years and am coming home now.

Link for English Manual.
http://www.waeco.co.uk/docs/Ins_EC1500_2000 ManualENG.pdf
The max operating ambient temperature is 43 deg C.
Power use is 900w for 1500 unit 1200w for 2000 unit.
Best of luck, people were leaving where we were in Italy 2 weeks ago because of the heat.

I guess I better rethink my plans before taking a dog abroad with no aircon. Looks like another thing to add to my want list. Where are you ?

Hi
It could just need a top up on gas, i have just retired from running our own mobilehome rental company and all our units have air con and on occassions had the odd one topped up with gas and it is amazing the difference it makes. You should be able to get it done where you are if it is like France tyre depots or motor accessory depots do it. Just make sure they use the correct gas as older models will probably use a different type.

I use one of these instead of paying £50 + to have it done.
Once you bought the adapter and the gas cylinder it works out a lot cheaper.
The fitting fits on and you dial up the outside temp and run the pump and it tells you if you need to gas up.
One container will (top up) about x4 times.
For a complete refill of a system it takes a whole one.
Works out at £20 per exchange.

Also works on household fridges

Did you get your aircon recharged? And if so did you get the improvement you expected?

The man has just left. I used Airforce in Benidorm. Had the thing fully serviced and it seems there was no fill valve on it. So they fitted a fill valve and re gassed the system, cleaned out the debris under the cowl and its now working so well I have had to turn the thing down. Result ::bigsmile:
