We are heading for Scotland next week with little idea of where to go. Having been used to Aires in France not really sure how to plan. Do we really have to book from one campsite to the next? Maybe there are good wilding spots that you could PM me with. Also useful locations for filling/emptying (I like the French term 'vidange' - it sums it up succinctly)

East coast or west? North or South of the central belt? There is a lot to Scotland!

I understand the West coast has more to offer than the East. We like scenery and 'gentle' walks. No real hard and fast ideas, hence the request for suggestions.

Personally I have always preferred the west coast to the east coast. However, we spent a week in and around the East Neuk of Fife last year and it was beautiful.......the weather was great as well:thumb:

Over the Forth Road Bridge and head for the Fife coast and the little fishing villages like St. Monans, Elie, (the main street here is really wide and great for stopping with the motorhome), Crail, Pittemweem and Anstruther for the "award-winning" fish and chips:thumb: You can take a boat trip from Anstruther out to the Isle of May (bird sanctuary). If you decide to go to Fife then go to St. Andrews as well, plenty parking in the west car park close to the beach.

We spent a week at Sauchope Links site, in Crail, it's right on the sea front and a pleasant walk from there along the coast and into Crail. The Crail harbour gallery and tea room is a nice place for lunch or just a coffee, there are some tables outside with a sea view as well.

Edinburgh is wonderful too, we're off up there next week, a stop over in or around there is ideal if you were intending to go up the east coast too.

We lived in Largs on the west coast for a few years, so I'm a bit biased about the scenery on the west being better than the east.

But there are so many beautiful places in Scotland, you'll be spoilt for choice........the Borders are beautiful too, and not forgetting Loch Lomond and further north from there. I almost forgot to mention, Dumfries and Galloway region is lovely and quiet, we're 2 miles from Gatehouse of Fleet and there are many lovely, easy walks around us.

Can't help with wild-camping spots, we've never tried it yet and always stick to sites. Good luck and happy travels:thumb:

That's what I find problematical. We are so used to spending weeks on end just going from place to place, looking for the nearest Aire and stopping off for a day or so then moving on. I'm struggling with the idea of having to book a site, decide how long we would stay then having another site booked for the next stage and so on. It's the lack of flexibilty and sponteneity that constrains motorhoming in Britain. I suppose we've just been spoilt by the facilities on the continent.

We don't even know where we want to get to let alone booking up a series of campsites as destinations.

I don't think you need to book sites in June although some of the Caravan Club sites in popular areas might be busy at weekends.

If you want to be safe by all means book the first site for a couple of nights then either extend there or look for another site and phone ahead to check they have space.

The wilder parts of Scotland are sparsely populated so you do need to plan ahead for shopping and fuel. Don't expect to find many pubs in these parts either.

We are off for a couple of weeks on Sunday and sites have been booked as it is a mini-rally of 6 vans but if we were on our own we wouldn't have booked.

No thats the fun of Scotland.................the sparsely populated bits are find a nice view and park there off the road.

The West is much more interesting than the East, cause me and Geo live there.

You can park in 1000s of places in Scotland that are not sites, or you can go on a site and not wildcamp, it is just such a great place to be.

I am sure if you need specific information just PM me and I am sure Geo will be the same if you need anything.

You will enjoy it as it is the greatest SMALL country in the world.

Note of caution: This offer is only open till the 18th of September.

Always - off and on
Been camping and campervanning for 45 plus years every year at least once or twice around Scotland every year and have very rarely booked a site in advance - could count on the fingers of one hand the times we have found a site full and have never been stuck for finding the next site with space within probably a half hour's drive. Only ever in the "fair fortnight" (Glasgow hols. last 2 weeks July)
