We are booked Brittany Ferries 21st September to Bilbao and plan to go to Benicasim for a few months. We usually do french aires so newish to Spain and longstay winter funstering.
Could anyone help out with a few questions. We plan to travel from Bilbao to Zaragoza and then use the A23 - is this the best route? We have doggie in tow - is there an english speaking vet in Benicasim? Is Bonterra Park dog friendly and are there any good walks other than the promenade and into town. Any chance of watching any football on telly or in bars these days?

Any tips or advice would be much appreciated.

Greetings,

We have been to Benicassim a few times whilst tugging and intend to do so again when given the chance.

I don't know of your intentions in getting to Zaragoza from say, Tudela. You could use the AP68-E804 motorway but, if you use the alternative main road which is the A68, it gives you a chance to cut off the corner that is Zaragoza. At the end of the dual carriageway about 25kms south east of Tudela at Mallen you could turn right off that road towards Magallon. That in turn leads to the A121 and Ricla and Almunia and that in turn leads to Carinena where the road joins up with the A23 south of Zaragoza. At that point there is a truck stop (similar to our services)

Other than that I have no quibble with your route. I've done it in a day tugging after leaving the ship at Bilbao at 8.am arriving at 4.30pm.

There are loads of doggies at Benicassim but the site owners are VERY strict on the dogs being "exercised" ahmm! off the site. There have been reports of owners being asked to leave the site if they allow their dogs to make mistakes??

As for walks, turn left out of the site and, after about 800mts near the 'other' winter site at Benicassim, there is an old railway line, now converted to a fine cycle/footpath that goes to the next town up the coast, Orepesa Del Mare.

Spain shows their La Liga matches on terrestrial digital TV and the site has a very good restaurant with Sky hookup. They were showing the Rugby World Cup when we were last there at sometimes God knows what time in the early morning.
The site put on cookery demo's and organise trips to nearby towns festivals.
All in all a good choice for a winter stop at a town that doesn't close up in the winter.

Add to that a supermarket directly across the road from the entrance to the site and a Lidl 200mts on the right and you will be set up to enjoy the winter

Thanks emmitdb for such detailed info on route etc. I can now see looking at the map what you mean about cutting out Zaragoza and heading down the A220. Thanks again.

bonterra park is a great site and great also for dogs make sure you get the gate key from reception this allows you to exit the rear gate and just across the footpath there is another enclosed area for you to walk the dog this path also takes you into town just a 10min walk the bar area food and drink are cheaply priced and has been said the supermarket just outside the gate is a added bonus also a walk down the beach with the dog and with its good beach bars is a must we loved bonterra park and will return asap have fun and enjoy :thumb:

Bonterra Park

We spent 3 months there 2013, check with site if you need to book, you don't really want to end up at the top of the site in woods as it is very shady, fine in summer but not so good for winter.

Ps I forgot to mention the local Vet, We don't have a dog but two friends here have, both dogs have received treatments whilst here and We were told it was good, simple directions to the Vets ( Go to the top of the town there is a statue of a man sat on the wall turn right there and the Vets is on the right) I believe he speaks and writes good English, hope this helps. Bonterra Park

We visited Bonterra Park approx. 1x month ago.
The site is nicely laid out and very clean.
We booked on and chose a pitch, but on reading the conditions which you had to sign to.
We read the conditions for our Dog.
(1) The Dog is not allowed to pee on site.
(2) The Dog is not allowed to poo on site.
(3) The Dog must not be left alone in the van under any circumstance's

As we could not guarantee (1) & (2) we also had a problem with (3) as our Dog had torn a muscle in his shoulder, we were having to leave him in the van, which was causing no problems.
We spoke to the people at Reception and cancelled our booking.
We moved to a really nice site at Peniscola called Eden 2x minutes from the beach, great for Dog walking and cycling
Peniscola is weel worth a visit.

Got me thinking about Bonterra Park with doggy. Don't want to get ejected because she decides to have a peepee in a no go area. We just fancied it because it seemed to have supermarket, bars etc in walking distance which is great with the motorhome. Maybe we will think again. Thanks everyone for info - much appreciated.

Well either the owners have a phobia or there have been problems in the past. I dunno how you could prevent dogs occasionally watering the place - mean it's a dog's instinct to 'mark' its territory and by saying it can't do that, surely you are asking it to do something it can't?

Be much easier if they said no dogs. Then you wouldn't have to worry cos you just wouldn't go there if you had one!

Hi, Bonterra Park is OK and stayed there a couple of times but not for us, and as said the most anti dog site we have stayed on.

I would recommend going here : http://www.campingjoan.com/

A super market Bar / Restaurant on site Cambrils was a nice surprise for us, it has a nice marina and great town.
The cycle path and prom go all the way to Salou one way, and into a nature reserve the other, a great place for dogs. :thumb:
Down that end they allow dogs on the beach.

But I would say about November you should think about heading slightly further South. :thumb: Bob.

That sounds more or less what we want - somewhere we can walk out to shop etc. and as we are heading off in September it may be worth a shot weatherwise. Does anyone have a favourite spot in Portugal???
