Depends what you want to do on it.

I use http://www.openshot.org/ for the basic stuff.

I have also messed with these at one time or another but they are mostly too advanced for me and I don't do enough video editing to warrant learning too much.

Not sure which are available for your platform as you didn't say whether you were on Windows, Mac or Linux.. I use linux exclusively now.

I use Avid Studio which is not free, but is very good. It does a lot more than I need.

You can download a time limited version to try.

I used to use Pinnacle Studio which was similar and a lot cheaper, but this cannot cope with full HD files, which I need to watch my videos on an 8ft screen.

Free..

I've tried a few but Windows movie maker is as good as it gets..
I use it for making small movies that need little editing..

For more advanced movies, I use Pinnacle Studio 16

If you are serious about making movies there is no point in good software with inadequate hardware ... Video editing is probably the most intensive of all computer applications.

you need a lot of ram, 4 gb minimum , 16 gb ideally. I have 16gb
a fast processor, i5/ i7 I have i7-3007k 3.5ghz
good quality graphics card, with fast video ram, I have a Nvidia GeForce GTX 660
twin hard drives,
and twin monitors, I use 2 x 22"

The main reason I bought a desktop from PC Specialist to my own specification..

Windows Movie Maker does a serviceable job but can't cope with large video files, or certain types of video file, or loads of very short clips. I used it for quite a few years in the classroom with groups of up to 30 so I've seen pretty much every issue it can throw at me.

If the end product is just for computer screen display or YouTube your source files don't need to be massive so it might be worth looking at their size and amending it.

There are free video converters out there that will downsize your clips if necessary. I use one called Super by eRightSoft - it'll convert anything into anything: Paisley to Pope? No bother.

I don't know if you're doing anything with still images, but a useful companion to Movie Maker is Photostory 3 which can be downloaded free from the Microsoft website. It might even be on your machine as a freebie already. Worth an explore if you want to tart up still pics and add rostrum camera effects like pan and zoom.
