Son Steve aquired yet another Motor home project to tow his race car and provide creature comforts to our latest Grandson

This one having no tow bar fitted and an Alko chassis checked out flea bay and tinterweb but at between £400-£600 each we decided to fabricate one ourselves
70% of the time was wasted trying to cut through the plastic rear bumber only to find multiple layers of steel section hidden inside aprox two Hrs a side to make a 2" x 1.5" hole
welding and fabricating next
Me is begining to think the prices are not that far out:RollEyes:
Will post finished bar when painted
Easy enough job to do but where does the time go:Doh:

I got “talking” to a Swiss guy on a site at Frejus, he had the same van as me but his had a towbar fitted. Anyway after some gesticulting, he let me take some pics of his setup with the intent of making my own. It’s still on the “to do” list though since we sold the motorbike last year

I was under the impression that Tow Bars now had to be of the "type approved" version.

If you cannot produce the type approval documents for the MOT the vehicle could fail.

only for vans built from 2012 onwards, before that type approval doesnt apply. any welder fabricator could knock one up for an older van but it must pass the mot test

Peter

He does his own Peter:RollEyes:
Finished and even colour coded to van just awaiting end caps

No certificate of any kind for any year req for mot test, Mot Tow bar test is a quick glance to see if it bolted on and not corroded through, If the mounting points on the vehicle are corroded that dont matter:Doh:
unless its also a prescribed area for suspension and steering,or other testable item
Mr plod and DVSA have another set of rules called construction and use that does matter when checked roadside.
