Default caves at pech merle/st cirq la popie

hi - am off to the Lot - south of the Dordogne - in 3 weeks and am planning on driving over to the Pech Merle prehistoric caves from other side of Cahors, went to them about 20 years ago but can't remember what the road was like. anybody been there that can tell me please, also thinking of going to St Cirq le Popie but realise its going to be heaving that time of year, is there likely to be parking for motorhome on outskirts - thanks for any possible info

Hi Worky. We were at Popie about a week ago. We managed to drive up to the village but there was no parking for a motorhome. However there is an aire below the village - about 6 euros per night, and another chargeable parking area just above the aire. The aire looked good, but the walk up to Popie is very steep. We decided to stop at Cajarc about 8 miles east on the aire by the disused tourist railway station. Nice spot, and good small village.

hi potwalloper - thanks for that, on our Michelin map the roads look quite narrow but I assume there's no problems with motorhomes

The aire there is good, although you'll have to be there quite early in the day to get a place - it's right on the riverside, just outside the campsite.
We have stayed on the campsite itself on a few occasions.
There is a parking area just to the right off the main road up to the village, although it's not very large, and quite sloping. If you walk from the aire/campsite along the riverside, there is a steep path up to the village (a bit shorter and more shaded than walking up the main road)
