Use incredimail (small free download) and choose your alerter, I use it so I can be alerted for mail in case I get a campsite enquiry then I can reply quickly.

If you have Outlook installed (not Outlook Express!!!) you can configure it to alert you with each new email - my work email drives me crazy with its incessant alerting!!! Incredimail is a much cheaper option though

Yep,

Leaves a nice little animated Mail sign on the desktop.

with over 200 unwanted emails a day don't really want to be alerted, however if outlook express is open an unread mail envelope does appear in bottom right tray, I believe you can set sounds for that within existing software. (IE7)

Can't you add them to your spam filter list Roger?

what spam filter? I have filters set at the server (tiscali) and also in outlook, got fed up setting new filters. Just accept it as the price to pay for having the same email address for 10 years.
