With Microsoft's release of Service Pack 3 for Windows XP it became very apparent to us while building and reinstalling PC's, that there is an issue with Service Pack 3.

After it has loaded, on some machines, the automatic updates fail to function.

Here's the fix...AND it works.I have just done it.

You need to re-register the Windows Update .dll's.

I opened a command window (Start -> Run -> cmd -> OK), and typed the following commands, one at a time:

After each line press the return/enter key and wait for the confirmation message.

• net stop wuauserv
• regsvr32 wuapi.dll
• regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
• regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
• regsvr32 wucltui.dll
• regsvr32 wups2.dll
• regsvr32 wups.dll
• regsvr32 wuweb.dll
• net start wuauserv

Windows displays a confirmation box as each DLL is registered.
After this, when I tried the updates again via IE -> Tools -> Windows Update, everything worked as expected .

Thanks American Dream - I didn't know Service Pack 3 was available until I read your thread.

I have just installed the service pack and guess I was one of the lucky ones because my .dll's appear to be working well.

I operate the Internet through a "three dongle" and the update couldn't quite figure that out - so I had to phone the number supplied and manually insert the verification code - maybe that is why I didn't have a problem with the .dll's.

Anyway, all appears to be working well so fingers crossed for the future.

Why don't you put it in a batch file and upload it to the download section.

That's a lot of commands for people to type in...
