I have a Garmin 2610 - use it on the bike with a special mount, (it plays through the 40w/channel stereo so everyone around knows what the route is)
When in the car I use the beanbag - it can slip around a bit on roundabouts but I got one of those grippy sticky mat thingies for a fiver and it's perfect.
It can select routes for bike/car, pedestrian!, truck, bus etc but still sends you down narrow roads since it goes by the classification M, A, B, C, unclass etc and doesn't actually know how wide the road is
Also you can select your preference of Motorways, Trunk roads and Minor roads
The only real snag is when it tells you 400ft to turn and you are on it already - I suppose I could slow down a bit...
