I can picture a clutch master cylinder on the bulkhead inside the engine bay and on the passenger side the hole to the piston ( which has the ball socket in it ) with a rod to the clutch pedal. So if the clutch pedal "flirted" back the pushrod could drop out of it's hole.

Or I could be talking bollox, depends if it's your lucky day. Come to think of it, it isn't.
